How To Pick The Best Running Shoes (Feb 2018)

If you ask me what my favorite sport is, running is definitely one of them. Good runners required good running shoes. Do you know how to pick the best running shoes for your feet? There are thousands of running shoes in the market, which one will be right for your feet? If you are a first time running shoes buyer, keep reading, this running shoes buying guide will hep you choosing the best running shoes for your feet, even you are not a first time buyer, you may find some new knowledge from this running shoes buying guide.

So which factors do you need to pay attention to when choosing running shoes? The answers are:

  • Foot types
  • Running Style (Forefoot Strike, Midfoot Strike etc.)
  • Body weight
  • The type of the road

Foot Arches

If you want to choose the right shoes, we must first have some understanding of foot, usually there are three types of Foot Arches: 1. Normal Arch, 2. High Arch, 3. Flat Arch. As is shown in the figure.

Foot Arches

The arches of the foot, formed by the tarsal and metatarsal bones, strengthened by ligaments and tendons, allow the foot to support the weight of the body in the erect posture with the least weight (From WIKI).

In the meantime, the Low Arch (Flat Foot) is usually accompanied by Pronation, and the High Arch is usually accompanied by Supination. Be aware that none of them ar ill. After you understand these, you can choose running shoes now!

Foot Arches

So how do you know your foot arches? Am I pronation or supination?

Foot Arches Test

Wet your feet, stand naturally on a stay, then you’ll get your footprints, find your foot arches from the picture below.

Foot Arches

Pronation and Supination Test

Look at the sole wear, for Pronation: the inside of sole will be weared more heavily, for Supination: the outside of sole will be weared more than inside. e.g.:

Foot Arches

Left foot, High Arch, stress when running.

Foot Arches

Left foot, Low Arch, stress when running.

After reading these, you should know the basics of your foot. Let’s begin to choose running shoes.

Types of Running Shoes:

a. Cushion Shoes: Shoes for runners who do not need any additional arch support. These shoes provide some shock absorption and some medial (arch-side) support.

b. Motion Control Shoes: Shoes for runners who need a lot of arch support. Somesuper-cushioned shoesprovide as much as 50% more cushioning than traditional shoes for even greater shock absorption.Best for runners with a normal arch.

c. Stability Shoes: best for runners who exhibit mild to moderate overpronation. The runners are with a normal arch.

For Normal Arches people, The Cushion Shoes and The Stability Shoes is the best choices, For High Arches, The Cushion Shoes is better, and For Low Arches people, the Motion Control Shoes is more suitable.

The Stability Shoes

In general, stable running shoes are suitable for people who exercise often, they need to have some support on the Foot Arches. To meet these requirements, The Stability Shoes is usually heavier than The Cushion Shoes, so the lighter the shoes the better. The heel of Stability Shoes is basically two colors and there is a significant contraction of the heel and arch. Why? Because it uses more than two kinds of foam plastic, in order to achieve the correction effect. E.g.: Asics and Mizuno. Like Adidas, they have their own way - torsion system.

Foot Arches

The Cushion Shoes

Different brands have the different name for the cushion shoes, e.g.: Nike use Air and Air Zoom express it, Asics use GEL series, and New Balance use Abzorb. Their have the same effect – Cushion.

Foot Arches

The Motion Control Shoes

If you had ankle injury in the past or heavyweight, you should choose The Motion Control Shoes to protect the ankle.

This is a great video to finding the right pair of running shoes.

Tips: It’s better to choose your shoes in the afternoon, because the feet will swell at this time.

Since you understand these knowledge, is it still difficult to make decision? Next, we’ll recommend some to you.
